The business world has been talking about AI for several years now, and it's safe to say that it's reached a certain cultural moment among executives in areas like banking, insurance, and pharma. Government leaders have been much slower to start the conversation around the capabilities of AI, including the possibilities they offer to militaries and the ethical implications of AI when it comes to governance and the legal system.

Episode Summary: This week, we're going to be talking about the defense sector. We interview Ryan Welsh, CEO of Kyndi, a company working on explainable AI. We focus specifically on the unique data challenges of the defense industry, as well as the general use case of AI in defense writ large. Many of the challenges that the defense sector has to deal with transfer to other spaces and sectors. Business leaders that deal with extremely disjointed text information, what is sometimes called "dark data," and information in various languages or different dialects, will be able to resonate with some of the unique challenges talked about in this episode, and maybe even gain some insights for how to handle them.

According to Accenture, approximately 66% of A&D executives polled indicated they are looking at investing in AI for 2019, particularly on security, production, and R&D. 80% believe that AI-based decisions will have a direct impact on the workforce by 2021.

Data is essential when it comes to building machine learning models for business applications. A strong AI strategy is predicated on data that is specific to the business problem a company is trying to solve, as outlined in our recent article: Data Collection and Enhancement Strategies for AI Initiatives in Business. When it comes to executing on that strategy, oftentimes the first thing a company needs to do is collect some or all of the data it will need to build the right machine learning model for its use case.

Most of the time when we have requests for speaking engagements here at Emerj, they're from business leaders. At the time this article was published, I just came back from a presentation at National Defense University in Washington DC. Presenting there was unique in many regards. Obviously, the use cases for tanks and submarines are quite different than they are for drug development or selling more products off retail shelves.

What Happened
Through a variety of presentations for business and government personnel, I was put in touch with some of the leadership at the Defense Innovation Unit at the Department of Defense, which is essentially an arm of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). In talking to those folks, I was introduced to a professor at the National Defense University in Washington DC who was very interested in how to bake artificial intelligence use cases and understanding into their curriculum in order to help train military leaders on how to fruitfully leverage these technologies.

After plenty of deliberation, web development and research, we’ve finally rebranded to Emerj Artificial Intelligence Research.
I’m glad I finally won’t get any more “so when are you rebranding?” emails.
It sure did take more effort and development work than I had expected (lots of new features / functionality to build out), but it was well worth it.
